Dance Toward Enlightenment
By Beverly Andrews
Songs of Bulbul is a new work danced by Aakash Odedra, developed in collaboration with choreographer Rani Khanam and composer Rushil Ranjan. It is a profound and shattering journey toward the divine.
Inspired by the Sufi myth of the bulbul (a nightingale), the piece combines traditional Indian classical dance, Kathak, with contemporary movement. Songs of the Bulbulleads us on a path of spiritual awakening through the ultimate sacrifice—death. The bulbuls, known for their spiritually enchanting songs, were believed to sing with increasing transcendence the more intense their captivity became, until they offered one final, heart-breaking song before their soul left their body.
Odedra—recently appointed associate artist at Sadler’s Wells—is a visionary dancer and choreographer. In this performance, he embodies the journey of the caged bird with stunning intensity, beauty, and razor-sharp precision. The result is both heart-wrenching and sublime, leaving the audience feeling bereft and enlightened all at once.
When every element of a theatrical production—the performance, storytelling, choreography, lighting, music, and set design—comes together as seamlessly and powerfully as it does here, it compels the audience to rise to their feet in a well-deserved standing ovation. Few shows earn that honour. But when you’re left contemplating whether to remain bound to the material world or, like the caged bird, cast off your chains and soar toward spiritual freedom, you know you’ve witnessed something extraordinary.
