SOULMATES

At some stage in our lives, we’ve all secretly dreamt of meeting our soulmate: to reach the perfect harmony in a relationship, experience ecstasy or put an end to a deep feeling of loneliness. The American series “Soulmates” takes a 15-year leap into the future, to a world that is in many ways unchanged but where phones are made from a material similar to glass or crystal and computer screens are huge, transparent and in 3D. Moreover, a high-tech company – most likely from Silicon Valley – has developed a technology capable of reading your iris, the DNA of your soul and, providing they too have been tested, reveal the identity of your soulmate.

It will come as no surprise to viewers that this test has rapidly caught on in 2026. Though some are driven simply by consumerism, many people have been able to experience true love thanks to this new technology. Those already settled in a relationship before this scientific breakthrough are tempted to take “the test”, especially when a dispute arises with their partner or boredom sets in, feeling it would be a pity to miss out on such a blissful experience…

Each episode is unique: different actors, different storylines, different genre. Some episodes are really funny; others scary, even morbid. The long awaited test can lead to major complications, revealing for instance that your soulmate is of the same sex, a foreigner, a psychopath or even a dead person… Some characters are gullible and put all their faith in the test, others prefer to be masters of their own destiny and stay true to their loved one. While some choose to leave everything behind and risk starting anew, others take advantage by having their cake and eating it. A few even become vengeful.

As the series progresses, it gets steadily darker. Meeting one’s soulmate can bring you the best, or the worst: bliss, or pain. You might discover an unattractive quality to your soul that you wish had never come to light. It’s quite possible one might end up regretting all those wasted years living a peaceful, mundane, slightly boring life without challenges or the experience of true joy.
