Rewriting Amanda Knox

How The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Reclaims Her Story

By Pierre Scordia

Beyond the true-crime story, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox explores the construction of female evil. Blending truth, fiction, and the media gaze, the series restores depth to a young woman the world had already condemned.

The Amanda Knox Case: From Crime Story to Media Storm

Beginning in 2007, the murder of Meredith Kercher, a British Erasmus exchange student in Perugia, captured and divided international public opinion. Covered intensely by British, Italian, and American media, the case quickly turned the victim’s American roommate, Amanda Knox, into the central figure of the scandal.

At the time, tabloids portrayed her as a cold, manipulative young woman — sometimes even a depraved one. The dominant narrative centered on a four-person sex game gone wrong, a scenario largely fueled by media fantasies. Although several individuals came under suspicion during the investigation, only Amanda Knox attracted sustained media attention. The treatment of the case illustrated a persistent trend: the demonization of the woman at the heart of the drama — an inheritance of witch hunts and vilified female figures throughout history, from Marie-Antoinette to Monica Lewinsky.

The Hulu-produced series The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, available on Disney+, offers a compelling counter-narrative. Co-written by Amanda Knox herself, the fiction retells the events from her perspective: that of a young woman wrongly accused and ultimately exonerated by the Italian Supreme Court. Shot in both Italian and English, the series subtly blends the two cultures that clashed throughout the case, lending the whole work an uncommon sense of realism.

An Italian Investigation Full of Errors and Contradictions

The initial investigation by the Perugia police — ill-prepared for a crime of this scale — was marked by errors and approximations. The absence of a lawyer and significant language barriers partly explain the inconsistencies in Knox’s statement. Meanwhile, the true perpetrator, Rudy Guede, was arrested and convicted without attracting comparable media scrutiny.

Grace Van Patten’s portrayal of Amanda Knox is remarkable. The actress manages to convey the fragility, confusion, and dignity of a young woman caught in a media spiral far beyond her control. Her restrained, nuanced performance gives the series an unexpected emotional depth.

Monica Lewinsky and Amanda Knox: Two Women Facing the Media Machine

Monica Lewinsky’s involvement as producer — herself a victim of media cruelty in the 1990s — adds a metatextual dimension: two women marked by public condemnation joining forces to interrogate how scandal is manufactured.

Beyond its legal-thriller aspects, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox stands out for its meticulous direction, fluid writing, and critical perspective on the ways society judges women.

By giving Amanda Knox back her voice and humanity, the series reminds us that the real crime may not be the one we think: it is the narrative imposed on women before they have the chance to defend themselves.
