This morning BBC news featured a Ukrainian woman who was forced to flee her home in Kyiv with her 15 year old son, leaving behind her beloved husband and older son, who were both staying behind to fight. She told the interviewer that she was forced to stop talking to her Russian friends because they didn’t believe her when she told them what was happening in her country.

I found her words explaining the situation in Ukraine and why it was necessary to stand up to the invasion both poetic and profound.

I left My Tears in Kyiv

It’s not just about our pain

It’s not just about Ukraine

It’s about our civilisation

It’s about our values

It’s about humanity

She has not left Ukraine yet, she is helping a voluntary organisation near the border get supplies to those in need. When the air raid siren started, they went down into the basement of the building and turned the lights out, but they carried on working.

When she spoke to her husband via FaceTime her main concern was whether or not he had food, when she heard that he was eating, she cried.
