‘Jakinta’  – A cheery monologue

By Bettina Gracias

In these strange times all the theatres have had to close their doors to the public. Being innately creative, however, they have come up with ways to keep us entertained during the lockdown. Kali Theatre Company asked me to write a short, comedy monologue to cheer people up whilst stuck in isolation. It was nice to have a project as, with the current uncertainty, it is hard to keep a focus on potential future projects.

The character, Jakinta, played by Sakuntala Ramanee, comes from my stage play ‘Watching You’, which won the Sultan Padamsee Award for Best Theatre Play in India in 2018. I thought she was the perfect person to cheer us all, with her wonderful spirit and sense of adventure and love of internet dating, she won’t let the lockdown lock her down.

Sakuntala recorded the monologue on her phone in her bathroom and it was directed, virtually, by Helena Bell, Artistic Driector of Kali Theatre Company.
