Circles | Michael’s Story

Review by Bettina Gracias

I don’t know when it started but in the last few years 24-hour news has meant 24 hours of hearing the same item over and over and over, again and again and again. At the moment it’s Covid, a few months ago it was Brexit, before that it was whichever terrorist attack, earthquake or flood was most recent.

Unless one listens to The World Service, which seems to be the only station that offers a wide perspective of what is happening in various countries across our planet, one can forget that there isn’t just one thing going on at a time that concerns all of us.  As doctors are currently keen to point out, Covid is not the only health problem affecting populations at present and it is important for us to remember not to forget this important fact. Which is why Beverly Andrews’ play ‘Michael’s Story’ is a timely and gentle reminder that there are other issues such as Homophobia and HIV, which, sadly, still need addressing too.

The play is a touching love story between two, very different, men. Michael, a sweet innocent from the South and Rob, a brash New Yorker. The characters are brilliantly played by Greg Miller Burns and Oliver Hamilton which is reflected in the fact that you care what happens to them almost instantly. It is currently a zoom reading of an hour-long theatre piece but it could easily be developed into an excellent and important feature length film, showing a side of life still not often seen on screen, which I look forward to watching soon.
