Ash

By Bettina Gracias

It is hard to believe that it was almost a year ago, April 2020, that I answered an advert on the BBC Writers Room page to send in a ‘dark’ ten minute script on life under Covid. I can’t really say where the idea or the characters came from, it all happened spontaneously without any planning or forethought but the minute I ‘saw’ the characters, I knew that I wanted Sakuntala to play Lakshmi and Nimmi to play Priti. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to direct the recorded ‘reading’ via zoom with Nimmi in Sri Lanka and Sakuntala in London. It was wonderful to connect with them both and is one of the ‘plus’ sides of our lockdown lives. Pre-Covid I would never have conceived it possible to make a film with two people on opposite sides of the World. We recorded the piece in December and sent it to the theatre company who edited all the short films together and added the music.  When life opens up again I may make a proper film version of ‘Ash’.
