I was first inspired to write this play when I visited Sylvia Beach’s wonderful bookshop ‘Shakepeare and Co’ in Paris in November 2019. The more I read about her incredible story, the more I thought it warranted a script of some kind. As I did my research however, the story I focused on took a different turn and as it was the centenary of the publishing of James Joyce’s Ulysses, I thought it would be an excellent time to tell the story of how Joyce met Sylvia Beach and the course of their relationship. I was extremely fortunate to receive funding from the Arts Council to work on this project. It is, at present, still a work in progress and this is just a zoom recording of a reading but I hope you enjoy it. I plan to adapt it to both stage and screen next.
