Through comedy, documentary, and drama, these films reaffirm cinema’s ability to bridge cultures and speak to our shared humanity.
Black Queer Voices
Brave Beauties shot from 2014 onwards consist of a series of portraits of Trans women, gender non-conforming and non-binary. Many of the women photographed are also beauty pageant contestants. They enter these pageants in order to change the mind set of those present. Those who are often happy to persecute trans-women. So, these images challenge transphobic stereotypes and stigmas.
Stories from The Front Line
Three films in the Human Rights Watch Film Festival 2019 particularly stand out: Facing the Dragon from Afghanistan, Saf from Turkey, and Everything Must Fall (South Africa). They illustrate the importance of recording stories of resistance in an era marked by the rise of authoritarian regimes.
